Times Square Installation Responding to Gulf Oil Spill
August 20, 2010
Just months after the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill, the Human Impacts Institute’s Executive Director Tara DePorteperformed in SpilLover, an eco-installation piece in Times Square.
A concept by Josephine Decker mixing dance, installation and interactive media, performers circled Times Square for five days with very full buckets of “oil” on their heads, their clothes growing darker and darker with each passing day. As passers-by stopped to stare, take photos, and ask questions of the silent performers, dialogue around the oil spill evolved through curiosity.
