Hii Congratulates First International Environmental Leadership Certificate Graduates
January 22, 2011
As a part of the Human Impacts Institute‘s (Hii) pilot program in South Africa, Hii staff trained three local youth in issues of Sustainable Development, Gender and Human Rights. These youth were all students or recent graduates from the University of Kwazulu-Natal, SA and had diverse experiences in community development, environmental management and women’s economic empowerment.
The graduates of the Hii Certificate Program (Minenhle Ndlovu of South Africa, Xolani Magwaza of South Africa, and Kandolo Muzombo of the Democratic Republic of Congo) worked for two weeks alongside students from Webster University in the Netherlands to develop skills in fieldwork, interviewing, translating, and topic-specific research. The students worked with over 100 rural women in the province of Kwazulu-Natal and partnered with a local NGO throughout the training to help build local capacity for sustainable community development.
Following the completion of the two-week intensive training, all students were provided internship opportunities, developed and facilitated by the Human Impacts Institute, with local organizations.
