How HII Thinks Global and Maps Local with Green Map System!

August 2, 2011

Join the Human Impacts Institute Community Conversation as we introduce our partner, the innovative Green Map System.  What green map would you like to see in your community!

On Thursday, July 28th, 2011 – The Human Impacts Institute (HII) visited Green Map System’s East Village office to discuss future partnership programs and learn more about the nonprofit’s innovative services. Wendy E. Brawer, founding director of Green Map System, along with two interns welcomed HII staff with prepared materials about their exciting website and programs.

GreenMap.org promotes inclusive participation in sustainable community development – now communities in 55 countries are using map-making as a medium for engagement. Online since 1995, GreenMap.org was relaunched in May 2007 as a presentation, collaboration and resource center for finding fresh locally created Green Map editions from all parts of the world. There are multilingual resources in Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and other languages.

Recently, a new participatory map-making platform, the Open Green Map, was launched. Today there are over 200 interactive Green Maps and 17,000 sites charted by local Green Mapmakers around the world. Designed to help these green living, natural, cultural and social sites become part of people’s life as they help communities become sustainable and climate-resilient places, Open Green Map encourages users to suggest new sites and add their own viewpoint and images to existing sites.

Supporting Green Map System’s mission of expanding the demand for healthier and greener choices, HII is excited to co-develop an interactive Climate Green Map of NYC’s organizations and initiatives. An ideal way to build the new NYC Climate Coalitioninitiated by HII, the Coalition intends to utilize the Open Green Map platform to chart climate projects throughout New York City. The resulting map can be embedded in other websites, blogs, social media platforms and used with mobile phones, and engage broad audiences.

Each site on the Climate Green Map of NYC will include detailed descriptions and related facts, the public’s photos, videos, pdfs, as well as comments and ratings by users. The Coalition is also exploring another potential feature project, a custom made NYC Climate Application. The application will include Coalition’s calendar, tips, blog posts and other resources.

During our recent meeting, Wendy, who has over 20 years of experience in sustainable system and service design, provided many insightful tips on communicating about sustainability and showed her passion for environmental work. HII can’t wait to partner with Wendy and Green Map System to spread this successful initiative to even more communities.
