This past weekend I had the great fortune to represent the NYC Climate Coalition at the Green Festival, held at the Javitz Center in midtown Manhattan on Earth Day weekend. It was an enormous event, with hundreds of vendors, as well as 4 stages with a variety of dynamic speakers. The Climate Coalition shared a booth with the Green Map. Our booth was on the same row as other nonprofit environmental organizations doing smart work on issues in New York, such as fracking and water defense.
We met people from all over – from locals, to upstate New Yorkers, to folks from Pennsylvania and as far away as New Mexico. It was a pleasure to speak with so many different people who are genuinely interested and concerned about the environment and want to know how they can get involved or what more they can do to help the climate crisis. Many local people want to get further involved with the Climate Coalition and help fight climate change in New York City. It was an excellent turnout and an inspirational event.
The Human Impacts institute facilitates the NYC Climate Coalition and HII was one of the top 5 finalists for a grant from the Ford Community Green grants by the Ford Motor Company. Although we encouraged people to vote for HII, we did not make it. However it was an honor to be one of the 5 finalists after many groups applied. The opportunity to vote was displayed prominently and many people took part in the voting.
