The Humans Impact Institute headed to Washington, DC, for Earth Day 2012. The day was held at the National Mall (in front of the Capitol) and was sponsored by Earth Day Network. The theme was “Mobilize the Earth and demand a sustainable future” and it featured music, entertainment, and speakers such as EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, Rev. Jesse Jackson and Bill McKibben. Many organizations (NGOs, governmental institutions, UN agencies and others) also set up stands to feature their work.
The Humans Impact Institute and other partners of Mobilize US Coalition participated in this event. This coalition partners had the opportunity to present their work related to Rio+20 at the tent that iMatter, organized. Besides HII, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the Earth Charter International Secretariat and Fundecooperacion made presentations.
iMatter organized a march around the National Mall, Tara from HII, Alicia from the Earth Charter International Secretariat and Carolina from Fundecooperacion joined the march to demand “climate action now”!
Although thousands of people were expected to this big Earth Day event, bad weather (strong rain and low temperatures) prevented many people to be able to stay outside and enjoy all the activities. HII was still happy to participate and to bring the coalition-building efforts of MobilizeUS! to the national stage.
