Fashion Forward- An Evening of Climate Conscious Couture Fashion

During Human Impacts Institute’s 10 Days of Climate Action 2013, the National Arts Club (NAC) presented an evening event celebrating the creativity of East Berlin. The highlight of this event, housed in the beautiful and historic NAC headquarters in Gramercy, was a runway fashion show that showcased the gorgeous, couture collection of Gregor Marvel. His collection possessed underlying influences drawn from Berlin cabaret and surrounding Berlin countryside. An amazing aspect of Marvel’s gorgeous designs: much of the materials he utilizes are vintage and repurposed. The result? A truly unique, colorful, vivacious, and tres chique collection that keeps fashion creativity at a high and environmental impact at an extreme low!

HII ladies Tara DePorte (HII Executive Director and Founder), Melissa Mitchell (Program Coordinator), and myself, Melanie Griffin (Outreach Coordinator) actually had the opportunity to walk in the show! A true 10 Days of Climate treat! As we happily spend our summer months outdoors educating in NYC parks or beautifying tree pits, it was a nice change of pace for us to slap on some lipstick and wear some really beautiful, intricate, and environmentally conscious clothing! As we stepped on the catwalk, it was plain to see the audience’s exciting reactions to Marvel’s collection. Many uttered “oohs” and “aahs” as the designs slowly walked by. A great success it was! Climate consciousness is cool (and fashionable)!
