Lynne Schmidt, "Wood Chipper/ It's only a small world when you're sitting still"
"Wood Chipper" & "It's only a small world when you're sitting still"
Wood Chipper, explores the weight of cutting down trees and feeding them into a wood chipper - how the trees struggle to survive, and how the sap looks like blood afterward. Both poems try to convey the connection that humans SHOULD feel to the earth, but many times don't. The aim is to call people to action - for them to be more mindful that the earth was not made for us, but rather, we are part of a delicate balance and each life - tree, flower, mammal, matters, not just human lives.
It's Only a Small World when You're Sitting Still, explores how capitalism has people so focused on the concrete slabs we live in but are actually born with wanderlust to be in the wilderness. Both poems try to convey the connection that humans SHOULD feel to the earth, but many times don't. The aim is to call people to action - for them to be more mindful that the earth was not made for us, but rather, we are part of a delicate balance and each life - tree, flower, mammal, matters, not just human lives.
