By Way of Water / Idea Reid
Reid’s piece conveys the sense of duty and responsibility one has to their home, especially when it is confronted with change and uncertainty. Most people probably wouldn’t consider the North Shore waterfront of Staten Island one of the prettiest landscapes in NYC. It is full of ships and the backdrop of dirty factories across the water in New Jersey. By dancing in front of it, Reid connects to the landscape and invites us to view this pollution-speckled waterfront as still beautiful and worth protecting.
By Way of Water inspires a climate renaissance by affirming our desire to protect our homes from the climate crisis. At first glance, the waterfront seems damaged beyond repair, but Reid reminds us that there is always an opportunity to combat climate injustice.
