In Extremis, 2024 Installation / Claudia O'Steen

In Extremis is a compelling multimedia artwork that focuses on the profound effects of climate change and human intervention on the South Carolina coastline. Through extensive fieldwork and research, the artist has carefully examined the intricate dynamics of salt marsh erosion and its transformative impact on the surrounding landscape, leading to the formation of haunting ghost forests. As ghost forests continue to proliferate at an alarming rate, exacerbating erosion and amplifying the risks of flooding and property damage, In Extremis not only raises awareness but also inspires engagement and action among local and remote communities facing similar challenges along the Eastern coastline.

Claudia O'Steen is a practicing artist and Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Winthrop University. Originally from Alabama, Claudia received a B.F.A. from Watkins College of Art, Design, and Film, and M.F.A. in Digital+Media at Rhode Island School of Design.
