We Stand Under the Waxy Leaves, 2024 Sculptural Installation / Sarah Walko

We Stand Under the Waxy Leaves of the Ancient Genus, a Tree That Appeared Before Even the Bees, and Watch as Fireflies Land on the Tough Petals Until Each Broad Flower Glows Like a Torch-lit Mausoleum.

In  this installation the artist assumes the role of collector, maker, and arranger, weaving together organic ephemera and ancient artifacts to construct immersive environments steeped in narrative and mysticism. Inspired by literature and storytelling structures, each installation offers a rich tapestry of interconnected narratives, decentering the human perspective and celebrating the animate essence inherent in all things. Central to the artist's practice is a commitment to sustainability and a reverence for the inherent wisdom carried by materials sourced from landscapes and repurposed found objects. The artist invites viewers to engage with the primordial space of dreaming together.Sarah is an artist, director, curator, and writer and currently the Director of Visual and Performing Arts at the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House in New York City.  She is drawn to the worlds created by imagination.
